Nancy Desert Lizard Heraty, C-IAYT

I love to share what I love to do, which is why I teach Hatha Yoga. I love to see the connection in my student’s eyes when my teaching reaches them in a new way. I am a certified yoga therapist, C-IAYT, from the International Association of Yoga Therapists. I work with all ages and abilities with both groups and individuals. My yoga journey began as a student in 1995 and naturally began teaching yoga in 2002. I have completed training with Elise Miller to become a Yoga for Scoliosis Trainer, and I currently teach classes for Scoliosis and Back Care. I continue to be a student of Yoga as I work with the renowned Master Teacher Gabriel Halpern. What I experience in my personal practice circularly flows into and informs my teaching which flows into and informs my practice. My background as an artist brings passion, creativity and soulfulness into my yoga journey. As well as teaching in ongoing yoga classes, I have been a yoga teacher and guide on biannual vision quests and soul retreats held in Arizona, Wisconsin and Missouri.

Educational Experience

September 2007 to January 2012
Yoga Circle, Chicago IL
Gabriel Halpern, Iyengar Yoga Teacher & Director
I was a weekly teaching assistant in Gabriel’s Level 1–3 yoga class. I adjusted students in their poses, demonstrated and led poses to the entire class. Each year, July through August, I acted as a substitute for Gabriel. I filled one of only four assistant positions.

September 2011, Yoga Union Back Care, New York City
Deborah Wolk and Alison West, Directors
I spent one week exploring the classes and teachings as well as a scoliosis workshop with Deborah at Yoga Union.

January 2010, I completed coursework to become a Yoga for Scoliosis Trainer, sponsored and created by Elise Miller, senior level teacher in the Iyengar tradition. My work began by attending the two levels of Elise's workshops, while working hands on with students, learning to correct alignment and study the sequencing of the classes. Coursework and practicum included working with two students with scoliosis over a three month period, creating a booklet of sequences for them and teaching them how to adapt yoga for their specific needs as well as written work and study.

Since September 2006, I continue to deepen my yoga journey as a teaching assistant, apprentice and student in ongoing work with mentor and teacher, Gabriel Halpern, at Yoga Circle in Chicago, IL. Gabriel was trained by B.K.S. Iyengar and his family in India. Gabriel has been my main inspiration and guide into a deeper path with Yoga.

April 2006, July 2006, July 2007
“Yoga for What Ails You” Workshops
I have worked as an apprentice teacher with Gabriel Halpern in three sessions of this workshop. I worked one-on-one with a student for each six week session. Duties included setting up the student in restorative and therapeutic poses as well as writing the sequences with pictorial references, pose specifics, instructions and benefits. Each student received a complete manual of the six week sequence with pictures of themselves in their poses.
